TEK Tuesdays: Popsicle Stick Catapult

Learn to make an extra strong catapult using very common materials!

What you’ll need:

• 17 Popsicle Sticks
• At least 5 Rubber Bands
• Hot Glue
• Bottle Cap (or equivalent)

Step 1: Glue a Popsicle stick standing up to two sticks laying flat.

Step 2: Repeat Step 1 on the other end of the “square”.

Step 3: Add the two highlighted sticks parallel to the original flat sticks. (Don’t forget glue!)

Step 4: Make a Tipi shape using two sticks standing vertically. Glue at the three points shown in the image below.

Step 5: Repeat Step 4 on the opposite side. Make sure that the highlighted edges are facing inward toward each other so that Step 6 will work properly.

Step 6: Glue two Popsicle sticks flat to the highlighted spots in Step 5.

Step 7: Glue two sticks flat to the previous two sticks as shown in the image below. Make sure to space them correctly according to image.

Step 8: Glue two more sticks parallel to the sticks in Step 6 for extra strength!

Step 9: Add 1 stick and 1 rubber band as shown below. DO NOT ADD GLUE! This part stays in place by weaving the stick under (blue arrow) and over (red arrow) the other sticks. The purple arrows indicate where the rubber band wraps around.

Step 10: Glue the cap to the top of the stick from Step 9.

Step 11: Hold the catapult horizontally and add a large dot of glue at the end of the stick from Step 9 until dry. This will help prevent the rubber band from slipping. Also add a few more rubber bands!

Enjoy your catapult! Be careful to choose safe objects to launch and never aim or launch at people, animals, or breakable things like glass.
